Lorry drivers to face tough new rules

Some of the new rules, due to be introduced in January, mean that operators will need to complete a daily checklist before setting off, and that their vehicles will have to undergo an annual inspection carried out by the States.

Drivers will also need to complete a day’s training each year.

Currently, the rules only apply to vehicles operating in Jersey under P30 permits – permits given for vehicles over a certain weight, height, width or length. This includes vehicles of more than 32 tons.

However, from January, the regulations will apply to vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tons, a move which will affect about 300 vehicles.

And in January 2019, the regulations will cover vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons – affecting upwards of 500 vehicles.
