Grants ‘will give people more reasons to come to the Island’

It was revealed last week that Economic Development Minister Lyndon Farnham is due to sign off the money for Jersey Hockey, the Lido at Havre des Pas and the inaugural Jersey Style Awards from the Tourism Development Fund.

Keith Beecham, chief executive of Visit Jersey, welcomed the government funding for the initiatives, saying that the projects would benefit both Islanders and tourists.

Jersey Hockey Club is to receive £40,000 to help with upgrades to its clubhouse and pitch while the Lido, managed by businessman Marcus Calvani, is to get £39,815 to increase the capacity of the venue.

A sponsorship package of £20,000 is to be given to the Jersey Style Awards, which are due to take place next month.

Mr Beecham said: ‘The Tourism Development Fund is trying to identify projects that will bring increasing numbers of people to Jersey. From a visitor economy perspective, those projects, I would suggest, give people more reasons to think about Jersey and come.

‘Research done by Visit Britain suggests that about five per cent of visitors to the UK come because of sport – either to watch or participate.

‘The hockey grant is supporting that part of the market. We will have a better chance of bringing players to Jersey of all ages.’
