Fall in debt judgments

From January to the end of March a total 480 debt judgments were registered, most of which were against consumers (424), with 56 judgments against businesses.

This is down by 5% on the same period last year, and the fourth year in a row the number has declined, according to the Registry Trust – a non-profit organisation that collects judgment information across the British Isles and Ireland on behalf of the Ministry of Justice.

The total value of the judgments in Jersey was £1.6m over the three months, with the average consumer judgement £3,186 and the average business judgement £4,517.

The chairman of the Registry Trust, Malcolm Hurlston, said: ‘The first quarter has been good for Jersey.

‘The number of debt judgments is down and it is relatively better than in England and Wales.’

The trust calculates that there were 4.13 debt judgments for every 1,000 people in Jersey during the quarter, compared with 5.16 per thousand in England and Wales.

During the three months the trust received nearly 8,000 requests to search the register for Jersey online. The websites trustonline.org.uk enables searches for judgments and information registered against businesses and consumers in the British Isles, including Jersey and the Isle of Man, for a nominal fee.
