Millions hear Island’s praises sung on BBC national radio

And after listening to swathes of listeners’ stories about the Island, host Chris Evans – who has never been to Jersey – declared he would be taking part in this year’s Jersey Marathon as part of Children in Need.

The DJ, who has a weekly audience of more than nine million listening to The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on Radio 2, fell in love with the Island after inviting people to submit their stories about – and connections to – Jersey as part of his ‘Top Tenuous’ section.

He also interviewed local grower Christine Hellio, who raved about the Island’s best-known export as well as generally promoting everything that is good about the Island to the millions listening.

During the show, Mr Evans said that people living in Jersey were ‘winning’ and always ‘happy’ and that Britain had ‘done well’ to keep hold of Jersey from the French.

John Garton, chief executive of Genuine Jersey, said that the coverage had been organised as part of a Jersey Royal publicity campaign.

He said: ‘I was listening to the show all morning and they spoke a lot about Jersey. We got some really great plugs and Christine did really well – she put out a really good message about the Jersey Royal and covered all the key points.’
