States to give £100,000 to tourism businesses

Economic Development Minister Lyndon Farnham is due to sign off the money for Jersey Hockey, the Lido café at Havre des Pas and the inaugural Jersey Style Awards, using money from the Tourism Development Fund.

The fund was established in 2002 with an initial £10 million of States funding to promote the tourism sector. Since then, the majority of the investment funds have been spent.

The decision comes in the midst of a furore over the government-sponsored Jersey Innovation Fund. Of the £2 million lent to start-up businesses, around £1.4 million is unlikely to be recovered, the Comptroller and Auditor General, Karen McConnell, has found.

However, Senator Farnham said that mistakes around the JIF should not stop the States from investing to promote local industries.

The Jersey Hockey Club is to receive £40,000 to help with upgrades to the club house and the pitch while the Lido café, managed by businessman Marcus Calvani, is to get £39,815 to increase the capacity of the venue.

A sponsorship package of £20,000 is to be given to the Jersey Style Awards, due to take place next month, which aim to celebrate ‘the best of living, working and visiting Jersey’.
