Letter to the Editor: Greenhouse sites should be returned to agriculture

Warwick Farm should not be considered a brown-field site which can now be converted willy-nilly to housing. It is a green-field site and should not be converted to housing. Farmland should revert to agriculture or be set aside.

This opens the weakness of this current government and every government before it. It has never been able to legislate on this matter.

Our Minister of Planning and the Environment has gone a step too far this time again. When you take the step of converting greenhouse to housing, it lays open the scope of converting every greenhouse site in the Island to housing. Money should have been put aside years ago to convert greenhouses back to farmland.

Our Planning and Environment Minister always tended to share the same role. This must be a major weakness. An Environmental Minister would argue for the land to be set aside and put in place laws to protect the countryside. Where is our Minister of the Environment this time? He or she is never there to be seen.

This photograph opens up a whole can of worms. How do we want our society to live in the future? Population is our problem and this has never been adequately dealt with.

I say that this government is ethically bankrupt.
