Did crash pilot forget to drop landing gear?

The French-registered V-tail Bonanza suffered minor damage when it touched down without its wheels at about 4.30 pm. The pilot is understood to have escaped unharmed.

Although numerous witnesses reported that the pilot had simply forgotten to extend his gear before landing, there was no official confirmation of whether the accident was the result of human error or a mechanical fault.

Graham Nears, an engineer at the Jersey Aero Club, said: ‘He was on the approach coming into land and I think a few people were watching from the viewing point and saying “he doesn’t have his gear down”.

‘The control tower were saying “go round, go round” but in the situation, especially as his English was probably not that strong, he just came down.’

Mr Nears said that he had pulled about six aircraft from the runway during his 25 years at the Aero Club.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch have been notified.

It is the second incident involving a light aircraft in the Channel Islands in recent days. Last week a single-engine plane en route from the UK to Jersey diverted to Guernsey after the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit. The plane landed safely.
