School wins national contest

Pupils across Britain were tasked with showing how discarded garden materials could be reused and turned into new items.

And Beaulieu’s entry of an ‘exploration board’ made from items such as a wellington boot and guttering to demonstrate water-flow impressed judges the most.

David Ferguson, head of digital innovation at EDF energy, who organised the competition, said that he was very impressed by the school’s entry.

He said: ‘It hit the criteria we were looking for, including being designed to last and innovative.

‘At EDF Energy, we are committed to teaching children about sustainability from a young age and feel that the upcycled water exploration board is a great way to inspire others to consider both household and water waste.’

Kelly Cronin, a Year 5 teacher at Beaulieu, said that she was very proud that the school had won the competition.

She said: ‘It was a real effort across the whole school, with children’s parents coming in to help to fix the equipment in place.

‘The children and teachers all learned lots, and really enjoyed getting creative with the school’s old equipment.’
