Law studies head given professorship

Dr Marrani, who joined the institute in 2013, is credited with developing the ‘double degree’, which enables students from the Université de Toulouse – one of the most prestigious universities in Europe – to study in Jersey.

Prior to working in the Island Dr Marrani taught at the School of Law and the Human Rights Centre at Essex University and has acted as a legal consultant for more than 20 years, contributing extensively to international publications and research.

External Relations Minister Senator Sir Philip Bailhache has said that he hoped that a link similar to that with Toulouse would be developed with the Université de Caen, as well as other universities.

The first intake of more than 20 students from Toulouse 1 Capitole University started their studies in September, followed a successful pilot programme in 2015 which saw ten students continue with their studies in the Island this year. The French students undertake the same subjects as local students working towards the University of London LLB and Jersey students can opt to study part of their course in Toulouse.

Speaking at the institute’s first graduation ceremony, Sir Philip – who was instrumental in the setting-up of the institute – said that when Dr Marrani first took on the role of director of studies, the institute was much smaller and the governing body were looking for ways to grow and build resilience. ‘Dr Marrani had developed the double degree while he was at the University of Essex and he used those skills to establish the links with the Université de Toulouse,’ he said.

‘The institute wishes to mark this success by exercising the power given in the constitution to recognise the achievements of its academic staff. I am very pleased to announce that the Institute of Law has conferred upon Dr Marrani the title and dignity of professor so that henceforth he should be known as Professor David Marrani.’
