New air taxi service launched

Isle-Fly, established by Paul Sabin, the former managing director of Blue Islands, and Colin Wright, launched the short-haul flight service on Wednesday. The new business comes after small airlines Waves and Air Alderney announced that they were due to begin operating from Jersey this summer.

However, unlike those airlines, customers of Isle-Fly, which operates from the Aero Club, charter the plane itself rather than buying individual seats.

The twin-engined Cessna aircraft, which can carry up to eight passengers, is capable of flying 1,000 miles but Mr Wright said that because of the size of the plane, it was more suited to flying up to 400 miles at a time.

To charter the aircraft to Guernsey customers can expect to pay £1,000, with the cost rising to £1,250 if it is needed for more than nine hours.

Mr Wright, said: ‘We started the project last year. It has taken around a year to get all the relevant regulatory permissions in place.

‘Things have been progressing steadily but we are now operational.’

Economic Development Minister Lyndon Farnham, who last year raised concerns over inter-island travel, said: ‘Niche and bespoke services such as this which only have a small capacity won’t have a big impact on inter-island passenger figures but they do open up more opportunities for those who are unable to or do not wish to use scheduled services.

‘I think they could also open up new direct routes to parts of Europe that we are wanting to engage with.’
