WATCH: Jersey kayaker filmed surfing a standing wave

The footage was taken on a recent Jersey Canoe Club trip to the Gulf, an inland sea which boasts tidal flows of up to 9.4 knots.

Standing waves are created when fast-flowing currents hit an underwater obstruction, like a weir, rock or reef and circulates back on itself. John is actually pointing upstream into the flow of water.
