Jersey beats UK’s best for 4G mobile internet access

This week a report from consumer group Which? and independent mobile coverage analyst OpenSignal found that mobile 4G connection ‘varies wildly’ across the UK, which lags behind Estonia and Peru for overall availability.

According to the research, Middlesbrough is the best city for 4G access with 83 per cent availability, while Bournemouth is the worst at 68 per cent.

The average overall 4G availability across the UK is 65 per cent, meaning mobile users can only access 4G two-thirds of the time.

Jersey was not included in the research but Tony Moretta, chief executive of Digital Jersey, said Jersey’s coverage is between 95 and 99.5 per cent depending on which of the three mobile operators you use, putting the Island at the top of the list.

He said that was something that the Island should be proud of.

‘Despite frequent moans about telecoms in Jersey, we should actually be proud of what we have,’ he said.

‘When compared to a recent report published by consumer watchdog Which? Jersey has significantly better coverage than the best connected city in the UK.

‘And that’s just mobile. Within 12 months or so every broadband connection in Jersey, whether commercial or residential, will be gigabit fibre to the premises – and that really is something to shout about compared to the UK and virtually every other country in the world,’ he added.
