Fishermen urged to log cuckoo ray landings

There have been no recorded landings of the fish, which grow to about 70cm long, in Jersey waters.

However, following the discovery of the cases it is believed there could be a small local population.

In a statement on their Facebook page, Jersey’s Fisheries and Marine Resources Department said: ‘Our colleagues at the Société Jersiaise Marine Biology Section have been collecting shark and ray egg cases for the last few years.

‘Interestingly they have found several cuckoo ray cases recently although we have no records of landings.

‘If anyone has landed one in recent years we would be very interested to hear about it.’

According to the Marine Conservation Society, cuckoo ray stocks in the Celtic Sea and off west Scotland are believed to be increasing. However there is a lack of data about the overall population size.
