Town parking charges to rise to tackle congestion?

Deputy Eddie Noel said that the targets to reduce traffic during peak times by 15 per cent by 2015, set by the States in 2010, had not been met. At the beginning of last year, levels had only decreased by 1.6 per cent.

Deputy Montfort Tadier asked Deputy Noel in the States this week what actions he was considering to reduce car usage in the Island.

The minister said that cycle routes had been improved since 2010 and that the number of people cycling and walking had also increased during the period.

He added: ‘I think the targets are unrealistic and the traffic levels are only going to improve if we increase the price of parking in St Helier. Our congestion level is not as bad as some parts in the UK.’
