Liberation strikes yacht in harbour – PICTURES

The fast ferry had just arrived from Jersey and was manoeuvring into its berth when it struck the moored catamaran and the pontoon, as well as a buoy.

A witness reported that harbour staff were on the scene ‘in minutes’ following the incident on Wednesday afternoon.

‘I totally did not expect what I saw from a ferry of that size. I thought to myself that he might have made a mistake taking the ferry into the harbour that far to turn around, and I was right,’ said the man, who wishes to remain anonymous.

The yacht was moved to another mooring while harbour staff assessed the pontoon.

In a statement, Condor said: ‘It is believed that a yacht moored in the harbour sustained minor damage. There are no casualties reported.

‘A thorough inspection of the ship’s hull confirmed that the ship has sustained no damage and was fit to continue her journey.

‘Whilst this took place, passengers remained on board and they were cared for and kept up to date by the crew.’

It is not the first time that Liberation has encountered problems while manoeuvring in St Peter Port Harbour. During its second commercial crossing in March 2015 it was damaged after colliding with fenders.

Guernsey’s Harbourmaster, Captain Chad Murray, confirmed that an investigation was under way, and added: ‘We are aware of some minor contact as the vessel was manoeuvring onto the berth.

‘It was only a minor incident and there were no injuries.’

He added that CCTV footage would be reviewed as part of the investigation.
