Cigarette smuggler fined

Catherine Jane Rebelo, of Rue d’Aval, Grouville, was stopped by Customs officers at the Airport after she had arrived from Liverpool at about 6.50 pm on 21 March, the Magistrate’s Court heard.

She told officers she had nothing to declare but a search of her luggage revealed 2,400 cigarettes, a bottle of vodka and a bottle of port. She pleaded guilty to fraudulently trying to evade paying £832 in duty chargeable on cigarettes and alcohol.

Advocate Lauren Glynn, defending, said that Rebelo was under a lot of stress and suffered from several conditions, and was confused about the amount of cigarettes she had bought.

Assisitant Magistrate Peter Harris said that someone who tried to avoid paying Customs duty on alcohol and cigarettes was ‘defrauding the Island’.
