Did Islander lie to get a registration card?

Glyn Gordon Mitchell is charged with making a false statement to obtain a registration card for US citizen Jonathan Zachary Wright to allow him to be given licensed status under laws that control access to work and housing rights.

It is alleged that Mr Mitchell (47), of St Brelade, committed the offence between 1 July 2015 and 24 February 2016. Mr Mitchell has been charged under Article 6(5)(a) of the Control of Housing and Work (Jersey) Law 2012. The charge carries a maximum sentence of two years in prison.

Relief Magistrate Sarah Fitz said that she believed the lower court had the power to deal with the case.

But she told legal adviser Advocate Darry Robinson that the prosecution could present arguments at the next hearing if they felt the case should be committed to the Royal Court.

The case was adjourned until 18 May and Mr Mitchell was given consent to leave the Island on three occasions in the interim period.
