Time for plan for Steam Clock?

However, James Morris from Ports of Jersey, which became the official owner of the Steam Clock last year, said that a decision would need to be made about its future at some point.

His comments come after local maritime historian Doug Ford shared pictures of the clock – which does not work – on Twitter and questioned the kind of advert it was for Jersey, particularly with thousands of people expected to flock to the area for the Barclays Jersey Boat Show this weekend.

Writing on the social media site, Mr Ford said: ‘A year on and the Steam Clock still stands wilfully neglected. Good advert for Ports of Jersey & the Boat Show, ha!’

Sharing a picture of damage to one of the clock’s large vents, he Tweeted: ‘If someone doesn’t shut the vent the wind will rip it off. Is this general malaise or planned neglect? #boatshow!!’

Mr Morris said there was a team responsible for ensuring the structure was safe but there was no immediate need to carry out any work.

He also said that Ports of Jersey currently had no budget to look at the future of the Steam Clock or make any improvements to it.

However, conversations remained ongoing with St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft, who previously expressed an interest in the parish taking on the clock in order to look after it better.
