Gorst: UK’s support is crucial to WTO bid

Following further meetings with UK government officials in London, Senator Ian Gorst said that the extension of the UK’s existing membership of the WTO to the Island remains a ‘key priority’ for the States.

Earlier this year it emerged that Jersey fears new tariffs and quotas could be applied on trade with the EU post-Brexit. However, membership of the WTO would allow the Island to trade internationally under more favourable conditions.

Senator Gorst said that discussions with the UK Department for International Trade about the matter had been planned.

‘As we have stated repeatedly, extension of the UK’s membership of the World Trade Organisation remains a key priority for both Jersey and Guernsey, and support from the UK Government is crucial to seeing this goal achieved,’ he said.

During his visit to London the Chief Minister met the Minister for Exiting the European Union, Robin Walker, in the third of a series of meetings with representatives from the Crown Dependencies – Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man.
