POLL RESULTS: The States shouldn’t be spending money on teaching parents basic home skills

On Wednesday we reported that five family support workers are to be appointed later this year – at a cost of £473,600 – to work with families in their homes to assist struggling parents with everyday tasks.

The Education Department said that the new staff will be able to help with things such as budgeting, time management, nutrition and cookery and dealing with States departments.

They said they hope the scheme will help tackle the issues before the problems become entrenched.

A total of 643 people took part in the JEP poll, with 71 per cent saying the States should not be spending money on such a scheme.

Dozens of people also posted comments on the JEP’s Facebook page – many saying that it was a poor use of taxpayers’ money.

Marian Le Cuirot said: ‘These are skills learned through the generations and handed down. It’s all too easy and fast today and we’ve lost the true commitment and meaning of family.’

Maria Oliveira said: ‘No … that’s pure laziness from those parents, there’s better things to spend that money on, such as ELDERLY SERVICES.’

And Jono Hackett added: ‘If you can’t manage your own life then don’t bring another in to it… simple as.’

But some commentators believed it was a good idea.

Dionne Herbert said: ‘Yes it’s a great idea we need to look after the future and children are our future’

Sean Oz said that if the States can ‘waste thousands on spin doctors then surely they can and should be helping those who need help’.

And Janet Marshall added: ‘Yes, if it means children are brought up in a better environment, it helps stop problems later on.’
