Construction employment levels ‘at 15-year high’

Construction Council vice-chairman Marc Burton said that public spending on projects such as Jersey Hospice and the International Finance Centre, as well as Andium Homes taking out a £250 million bond to fund social housing, have helped the industry move into a boom period.

Latest figures released by the States Statistics Unit show that 5,480 staff worked in the sector in June 2016 and employment increased by 240 workers during the year.

Mr Burton, who is a director at Camerons, which has been involved in the construction of the Jersey International Finance Centre, said that employment levels were at a ’15-year high’. He added that jobs in construction were likely to increase in the future as a ‘pipeline of upcoming projects’ had boosted confidence in the sector.

Mr Burton said: ‘Construction is busy. We had quite a difficult recession like most industries and really it was only about three years ago when we started to see an upturn in activity.

‘And the other one was we, the Construction Council, worked quite closely with the Social Security Department on the Back to Work initiative.’
