Son pays tribute to mother killed in her St Helier home

José Rebelo – one of Ana Rebelo’s two sons – also thanked Islanders for their generosity following a recent appeal for funds to repatriate his mother’s body back to Portugal.

Mrs Rebelo (51) was found dead inside 10 Victoria Street earlier this month. A pathologist concluded she had died from ‘compression to the neck by a third party’.

In a speech during the service, José said: ‘My mother was from a small village in Portugal. She married and had three children. When she was 39 she emigrated to Jersey in search of a better life.

‘She was a hard-working, humble and generous woman who wanted the best for her children.’

Mrs Rebelo’s husband, two sisters, daughter, other son and other relatives also attended the service.

More than 100 people were in attendance.

A 58-year-old man remains on police bail after being arrested on suspicion of murder.
