Thai murder case: appeal deadline extended

Wai Phyo and Zaw Lin, both aged 22, were found guilty in December 2015 of murdering 24-year-old former Victoria College student David Miller and murdering and raping UK resident Hannah Witheridge (23).

Following their conviction, both men were sentenced to death – most likely by lethal injection.

Both men lodged appeals against their convictions with the Thai Appellate Court, claiming that the authorities failed to properly examine key DNA evidence.

The court rejected the appeals in February this year and the defendants were given 30 days to submit a final appeal to the Supreme Court.

Lawyers acting for the pair successfully argued that the deadline was too short, and the date was extended to 23 April.

Now, according to Coconuts Media – a multinational news agency which covers large parts of Asia – the deadline has been extended to 23 May.
