Jersey group in ‘Premier League of bands’

Premier Brass has been taking part in the annual UK brass band competition for many years, but a successful performance in this year’s contest has meant they have won promotion into the championship – the equivalent of football’s Premier League.

Band chairman Keith Saunter said: ‘Although we were in a strong position going into this year’s competition, no one was taking anything for granted. It’s impossible to second-guess what will happen on the day, when 16 bands competed.

‘The judges listen to each one without knowing which is playing to avoid any suggestions of favouritism. All we could do was give it our best shot on-stage, and hope that it was good enough.’

The music played by Premier Brass in this year’s competition was The Land of the Long White Cloud, by composer Philip Spark.
