Puffins facing global extinction

The bird was once a common sight along parts of Jersey’s north coast, and still nests in large numbers on the island of Burhou, off the north-west coast of Alderney. A smaller number also live on Herm.

But the puffin has been placed on the ‘red list’ in the annual State of the UK’s birds report 2016.

Burhou island is the Channel Islands’ stronghold for the species. The small piece of land, which is less than a 1 km long and lies about two miles off Alderney, saw a rise in puffin numbers between 2005 and 2012, but suffered a decline three

Puffin numbers are dropping for a number of reasons, including a decline in one of their main food sources – sand eels.
