Letter to the Editor: The institutional power of religion is a terrible thing

I am sure ancient pagans did not miss out on marking the changing seasons with joy and party-going.

Easter, under different names, has been celebrated for thousands of years and monuments like Stonehenge were built to mark the dates of the winter solstice (now Christmas), and the start of spring (Easter). These monuments have of course been taken over and/or vandalised in the name of the latest deity (apart from Islam), and Christians have marked their new territories. For example by building a shrine on top of Hougue Bie, or tearing the statues of the gods (Elgin Marbles) out of the Parthenon in Athens.

The institutional power of religion is a terrible thing, and it is small wonder that voices are at last being raised in rebellion. Share and share alike, eh?
