They started with a dance and carried on from there…

St Lawrence residents Peter and Lucille Blampied (née Stephan) first met at the Regents School of Dancing in Georgetown when they were teenagers, and married around four years later on 6 April 1957 at St Thomas’ Church.

Describing their first encounter during a dance, Mr Blampied (84) said: ‘They paired people up at the dance school and I ended up getting paired up with her.

‘We got talking and she told me that she lived in St Saviour, I did too so we walked home together and chatted the whole way. It just carried on from there for the next 60 years.’

According to Mr Blampied, who worked as a traffic officer for more than 30 years at the Motor Traffic Office – now known as DVS – the proposal was rather straightforward. He popped the question while the pair sat in a car park in his black Austin Ten.
