Store asks to open on some Sundays

Although the DIY store had received permission several years ago from St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft to open on nine Sundays a year, it was discovered that the store’s owners had not applied for planning permission to make the temporary arrangement permanent.

B&Q applied for permission to operate last year but their application was rejected by the Planning Committee in October despite planning officers recommending that it should be approved.

At the time neighbours had objected to the proposals, claiming that Sunday trading at the site would have an adverse effect on their properties. A new application has now been submitted by the store’s agent, Quod, which has offices in London’s Soho area. In a letter accompanying the application B&Q says: ‘Across seasonal peaks, such as Easter and Christmas, B&Q typically welcomes 2,500 customers to the store on a Sunday. This demonstrates the demand from the public for additional Sunday trading.’
