Professional poker player Charlie Carrel, who is a former Mont Nicolle schoolboy, was playing in a high-stakes tournament in the Bellagio hotel casino when the man charged in.
After the casino was evacuated, Mr Carrel (23) left a message on Facebook to confirm that he and his friend were safe.
He said: ‘Just had to run out of Bellagio in Vegas because a shooter came in. Kelly and I confirmed not shot.’
It is not known if the incident was connected to a robbery at the Bellagio on the same night, when between three and seven people dressed in tuxedos and armed with machetes and a fake gun smashed through the glass front of a jewellery shop in the hotel, and fled with several items.
The Las Vegas Sun newspaper has described the incident – in which no one was injured – as a ‘Hollywood film-like heist’.
Mr Carrel’s mother, Jacqui, who works as a nutritional therapist at Feel Fab Nutrition in Jersey, said she was happy to hear that her son was safe.
Meanwhile, Mr Carrel is due to appear in an episode of the Channel 4 television programme How’d You Get So Rich? The programme is presented by comedian Katherine Ryan and the episode featuring Mr Carrel is scheduled to be shown on tonight, at 10 pm.
