Sion to get bus stop instead of memorial

It had been proposed that the memorial would stand in front of Sion Methodist Church, which, along with an old school hall and caretaker’s cottage, has planning approval for conversion into residential accommodation.

However, parish Constable Chris Taylor intervened and approached developers Larsen Ltd, as he wanted to secure a practical benefit from the renovation project for parishioners. They had no objection to changing their plans and last month the Planning Committee agreed to Mr Taylor’s request.

The planned memorial was approved as the developers’ Percentage for Art contribution – a scheme in which companies or developers pay to install public art or community improvements.

Once the new shelter is in place, Mr Taylor said the parish hoped to put one up on the other side of the road.
