Chief Minister has ‘head in the sand’ when it comes to poverty

Jersey children’s charity Variety spent £12,000 extra last year supporting an increased number of families in need of financial help and have said that politicians must pay more attention to what is happening around them.

And an Island Deacon who helps run a foodbank said that Senator Gorst’s statement is ‘inexcusable’ and ‘unforgivable.’

Earlier this month, in response to a written States question from Deputy Mike Higgins regarding income inequality, Senator Gorst said that ‘relative low income is reducing.’

This week he was accused of misleading the States in that statement and an open letter sent to the Chief Minister by Deputy Geoff Southern says that no evidence has been produced to back up the claims.

In response, Senator Gorst said that the economy was improving and unemployment was at a six-year low. However, he accepted that until the next income distribution survey in 2020 there would not be any definitive evidence to assess.
