Businesses ‘need help with new data rules’

Following a briefing with its members yesterday, the Chamber said that the Island’s data information commissioner had too few staff to support businesses ahead of new General Data Protection Regulation laws coming into force in May 2018.

Under GDPR, firms will face fines for incorrectly gathering, storing and using data regarding their clients. Chamber said that it was ‘absolutely imperative’ that every business in the Island was fully briefed and understood the implications of the new laws.

The vice-president and chairman of the Chamber’s digital committee, Eliot Lincoln, said that not enough had been done so far to support businesses before the introduction of the new rules.
