Reds’ thriller win helps bring in ‘hundreds of thousands’

Politicians and tourism bosses have said that the team plays an important role in injecting cash into the Island.

They spoke out after around 1,200 fans of top-of-the-table London Irish travelled to Jersey to witness their club’s unbeaten streak in the Championship come to an end at St Peter on Saturday, when the Reds beat them 15-11.

Keith Beecham, the head of Visit Jersey, said that his organisation worked loosely on the basis that every visitor spent around £103 per day, and added that he had spoken to many fans who were staying for ‘three or four nights’.

If 1,200 London Irish fans stayed an average of two nights, and spent £103 a day, the total cash injection for the economy would be almost a quarter of a million pounds.
