A rubbish life for gulls when Guernsey landfill site closes?

But with the site expected to close as early as next year, questions have been raised about what will happen to the birds that descend on it every day, with some asking whether the gulls will turn their sights on Jersey.

Guernsey is to start exporting its rubbish to Sweden, via the UK, for incineration, once a multi-million-pound waste transfer station is built, following which Mont Cuet will be closed and the former quarry will then be used for composting.

Dr Glyn Young, head of the bird department at Jersey Zoo, said that the number of gulls could decline significantly after the site is closed.
