Finding a solution to a truly toxic problem

The waste has been stored at the site since the 1990s, and there are currently more than 200 of the metal units – some of which are now rusting – filled with asbestos.

The stockpiles have previously prompted concerns from environmental campaigners about the material potentially posing a danger to the public.

Jersey’s approach dealing with the large stocks of hazardous waste has been a topic of debate for years.

The Infrastructure Department received planning permission in 2015 to build a £500,000 asbestos pit at La Collette.

The move came after plans to ship the waste to the UK were thwarted when the UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs decided not to issue the Island with an export licence.
