UK must realise its responsibility to Jersey over Brexit, says peer

Conservative peer Lord Boswell said that the UK had a ‘responsibility’ to represent the Crown Dependencies – Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man – on the international stage, including during forthcoming Brexit negotiations, due its constitutional relationship with the islands.

He added that while most islanders were aware of the importance of this relationship, many in the UK, including in the government, needed to be made more aware of it and his committee would aim to ‘make sure’ they were.

His comments come after it emerged this week that the Crown Dependencies fear being used as a ‘bargaining chip’ in Brexit negotiations and being ‘forgotten about’, as they claimed they were when Britain negotiated to join the European Community in 1973.

Lord Boswell said that his committee planned to ensure that the UK government remembered its obligations to the Crown Dependencies this time.
