Planning rules on old buildings to be relaxed?

Deputy Steve Luce plans to lodge proposals with the States with the intention of slashing red tape for Islanders, making it easier for them to rebuild or alter parts of their listed properties which have fallen into disrepair.

The minister says that existing rules protecting features of historical buildings in Jersey such as doors, windows and gardens may be too strict and could be making it too costly for many Islanders to maintain their homes.

At a quarterly public hearing of the Environment, Housing and Infrastructure Scrutiny Panel yesterday, the minister said that he intended to lodge a proposition this year with the intention of relaxing the rules.

Islander Ivor Barrette, who was fined £50,000 last year for removing windows from his listed property without permission, said that he would support the restrictions being relaxed.

The JEP contacted Jersey Heritage and the Société Jersiaise for comment but no one was available at the time of going to print.
