Lords urge government to fight for islands’ rights post-Brexit

Earlier this week it was revealed that the Channel Islands fear being used as a ‘bargaining chip’ during negotiations between the UK and EU as Britain prepares to sever its ties with Brussels.

And today the House of Lords EU Committee has published a report saying that while the three Crown Dependencies are not part of the EU or the UK and their residents did not vote in the EU referendum, Brexit will have a ‘significant impact’ on them.

Following a series of meetings with representatives from the islands, UK officials have determined that the Crown Dependencies’ ‘number one priority’ is to maintain their ‘close relationship’ with the UK post-Brexit.

But the report highlights several ‘potential tensions’ and areas of ‘conflict’ which may arise between the UK and the Crown Dependencies after Article 50 is triggered, severing the UK’s ties with Brussels.
