Castle hospital block could be opened up, if funding is found

Jersey Heritage are this year running a campaign called Love Your Castle. As part of the campaign the fortification will be opened to the public for free on Sunday 9 April when visitors will be able to access normally closed-off areas and encouraged to offer suggestions as to what changes or new attractions they would like to see.

Ed Sallis, chairman of Jersey Heritage, and Assistant Economic Development Minister Murray Norton, said the Napoleonic military hospital was a site which visitors walked ‘straight past’ on their way in and they are keen to open it up permanently.

Jon Carter, chief executive of the organisation, added: ‘Elizabeth Castle has stood guard to the Island’s premier maritime gateway for over 400 years and of course is now a significant visitor attraction. Yet, while it’s immensely popular with tourists, it is less visited by residents and we want Islanders to get to know it again.
