Bike shop proves a vital link in lighthouse restoration project

Mark Turner, Corbière Lighthouse’s keeper, recently began trying to restore the original clockwork mechanism which spun the shutter around the front of the light.

During the restoration work, Mr Turner found the device’s old chain in the back of a cupboard and tried to install it – but the metal was too heavily corroded.

After failing to free the chain up with oil and turpentine, he gave up and headed to the Bicycle Workshop in Les Quennevais.

And Mr Turner’s problems were soon solved by linking four BMX bike chains together.

However, the new chain will be solely for aesthetic purposes, as the shutter is now driven by a separate electric motor.
