Minister backs driving penalty points system

Several high-profile Islanders, including police chief Mike Bowron, have previously voiced their support for a UK-style points system, claiming that the move would especially help to crack down on people who use their mobile while behind the wheel.

In the UK, drivers can receive penalty points for a range of offences, including speeding, drink-driving and using a mobile phone. Drivers who build up 12 points in three years can be disqualified from driving and forced to retake their test.

During a recent Education and Home Affairs Scrutiny Panel meeting, Deputy Kristina Moore said that she, too, would support such a system.
