Move to urge BBC for free over-75s TV licences

At present, the licence fees for Islanders over that age are paid by the Social Security Department on a means-tested basis, costing the States about £220,000 a year.

The BBC pays the fees for everyone over 75 living in the UK, regardless of their wealth.

Last year, Deputy Montfort Tadier lodged a proposition asking Chief Minister Ian Gorst to enter into talks with the BBC about the situation, but postponed the debate after the then Assistant Chief Minister, Philip Ozouf, said that he was in negotiations.
