Having a woman on the board ‘means bankruptcy is less likely’

Speaking at a Chamber of Commerce lunch to mark International Women’s Day yesterday, Sam Cooper-Gray, chief operating officer of HSBC corporate banking in the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, said companies must do more to think about the people they were employing on their boards.

Mrs Cooper-Gray has worked for HSBC for 17 years and is the global chairwoman of HSBC Balance, a group of 44,000 employees who research gender issues within the company.

She said: ‘Of all public-sector jobs in Jersey, 30 per cent of the positions are filled by women.’
