Thai murders: Victim’s relatives call for death-sentence leniency

Wai Phyo and Zaw Lin, both aged 22, were found guilty in December 2015 of the murder of 24-year-old David Miller and UK resident and backpacker Hannah Witheridge (23).

After the men were convicted, both were sentenced to death – most likely by lethal injection.

The trial was dogged with accusations that the pair had been used as scapegoats and were forced into making confessions – which they later recanted – due to police torture.

However, in a statement released after the judgment was issued this week, Mr Miller’s family said the overwhelming DNA evidence proved that the right men had been caught.
