Police launch crackdown on drivers using mobile phones

Over the next seven days road checks will be carried out across the Island by States police officers, the honorary force and the Island’s Road Safety Panel in an attempt to catch offenders in the act.

States police chief Mike Bowron has said previously that the offence, which is known to have been a contributory factor in more than 100 fatal and serious road accidents in the UK in 2014, should be considered as serious as drink-driving.

Offenders in Jersey can face fines of up to £1,000. Sentencing guidelines suggest that a first-time offender who has taken or received a call and continued driving should be fined up to £500 and judges have the power to impose a ban.
