Successful reading scheme ready to help more children

Due to its success after just one term, education charity Every Child Our Future yesterday announced that it has extended its initiative to a further four schools – d’Auvergne, Plat Douet, St Luke’s and St Saviour’s.

And in the longer term the charity says it hopes it will have volunteers working in all of the 22 non-fee-paying primary schools in the Island.

Under the scheme, 270 volunteers – including 190 from the corporate sector – read with five to seven year olds in school and the charity also funds specialist teachers and assistants to work with children individually.

But Nick Kershaw, co-founder of the charity, says that by the end of the year he hopes to have up to 700 volunteers signed up to the programme.
