Unattended pasta pan sparks St Saviour fire

Two fire crews attended the incident in Dunell Road at around 2.15 pm after smoke was seen billowing out of a window and discovered that the fire had been caused after a cooker hob, which the occupier believed he had turned off, had been left on.

The contents of the pan, believed to be pasta, had boiled dry and ignited, causing a large amount of smoke.

The fire was quickly put out using a small amount of water and a ventilation fan was used to clear the smoke. No one was hurt.

Watch commander Andy Gallie said: ‘Unattended cooking is an all-too-common cause of domestic fires. In this particular incident, the fire damage was limited to the saucepan’s contents, but the smoke damage was more significant. Switching cooking appliances off at the plug, when not in use, is the best way to avoid this type of fire.’
