‘Inadequate’ student loan scheme ‘not fit for purpose’

Member Nicola Heath said the States do not do enough to let students know about the support that is available and that what is there is ‘inadequate’.

A report issued recently by Treasury Minister Alan Maclean which summarises the ministerial decisions made relating to budget transfers and States borrowing and lending during the first six months of last year shows that just seven loans were approved during that time.

The loans totalled £10,500 and take the total amount loaned under the Jersey Student Loan Scheme as of 30 June 2016 to just over £2.5 million. Loans are guaranteed by the States. The maximum limit that the States are allowed to have outstanding on the scheme is £10 million.
