The Island gets its second female rector

The Rev Beverley Sproats, who occupies the twin roles of acting priest in charge at St Augustine’s Church in Leeds and assistant curate at the nearby St John’s Church in Yeadon, has been chosen as the new Rector of St John in Jersey.

Mrs Sproats, who grew up in the Island before studying physics at Oxford University, is due to return to Jersey this summer with her husband Graeme and their three children to take up her new position.

She will become the Island’s second woman rector after the Rev Gerry Baudains was inducted at St Martin’s Church in 2011.

The Dean of Jersey, the Very Rev Bob Key, said the decision to appoint Mrs Sproats had been taken by the Bailiff, William Bailhache, in consultation with himself and St John Constable Chris Taylor. It has then been endorsed by the Bishop of Dover.
