New move to get the States to pay rates

Last year, during the Strategic Plan debate, States Members supported proposals by St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft requesting that the States pay rates on buildings across the Island – a move which would generate a total of £950,000 for the parishes each year.

St Helier would be the main beneficiary, receiving an estimated £600,000.

However, the move was halted during December’s Budget debate when Members rejected an article proposed by ministers which would have amended the Rates Law and enabled the States to start paying rates.

Now, Mr Crowcroft has brought forward a new proposal calling on Treasury Minister Alan Maclean to bring forward the necessary legislative changes which would see the States paying parish rates by next year.
